Oops.

This semester got the best of me and I completely forgot about my promised updates. I'm sitting between 190-195 these days. Starting weight training/boxing once my bartending class is over in 2 weeks, so with any luck, I'll have some tone to me with my next update. I promise not to forget you guys like last time. ;D

Sorry for shit quality, btw. Took these with my webcam because I'm entirely too lazy to get up and walk to the bathroom to take mirror shots with my Droid. Oh well, here you go:

Still a bit reddish, oc said that's entirely normal, though. The swelling on my flanks/sides is completely gone by now, so this is the final result as far as the lipo goes. I'm more than happy with the results. Summer's almost here, so hopefully I can get rid of this pasty whiteness to help lessen the color contrast between the scar and my skin, hah.

Next update whenever, but it certainly won't be as long as it was between this post and the last.

Also, someone contacted me on one of the obesity/gastric bypass/tummytuck websites that I frequent and asked me for a pic of the bottom scar, so here's more-or-less a pic of my junk:

That darker spot (as well as the wider scarring above my bellybutton) is from the plastic dissolvable staples that they used to close me up. I guess my body didn't like them too much, so rather than just dissolving, they rejected and I had to take them out myself. They weren't in that deep (I could see them in the wound), so I just disinfected some tweezers and pulled them out.

But yeah, that's all for now; I need to catch a nap before I head to work/go out tonight.

Christ, I'm hairy.

Black and Purple

Here's the update I promised the other day. These first two pics are from the early January, so about 2 weeks post-op. The scarring's still pretty bad in them, but much it's better than it looked in the last update. Nipple dressings had been recently removed in this picture, so they're kinda scabbed up too.

And some fresh pictures! These two were just taken. The white stuff you'll see isn't anything wrong with the incision; it's just some ointment that helps diminish the appearance of scars. From what I read, about a month out is a good point to start putting that sort of stuff on to help the scarring become less pronounced. From other blogs/pictures I've seen of people who are a few years out from surgery, the scarring is hardly noticeable at all.

I'm still fairly swollen in my sides/flanks from the lipo they did, but my doc told me that it tends to take upwards of 3 months for the swelling to recede to the point that it will be at permanently. In other news, after a run-in with my dresser in the middle of the night, I no longer have drains in. Luckily, it was draining much less than the 30mL per 24 hours that my doctor told me is the threshold for removing them, so I shouldn't have anything to worry about in regards to excess fluid building up. The scabbing, for the most part, is gone and my nipples are looking much more normal. I am very pleased with the results thus far, and am looking forward to seeing the difference between the picture in the last update versus what they'll look like years down the road.

I'm a few days away from being a month out of surgery, so I'm going to just count this as my one-month update. I will likely post another update in a month, so that the pictures and write-ups don't get too redundant. Oh, and before I forget, Pittsburgh still blows. Seeya this time next month!

Chicks dig scars, right?

As promised, here's the post-skin removal pictures I mentioned last night. Once again, this is me reminding you that they aren't pretty. If you are made queasy by blood or anything of that nature, feel free to scroll on past to prior updates.

This is me the day after the nine-hour surgery to excise the loose skin I had amassed as a result of massive, rapid weightloss. Now that I think of it, I guess I forgot to mention that part before. Since I had so many procedures done at the same time, it was estimated that my surgery would last eight to nine hours. Luckily, it felt like just a few seconds to me -- yay anesthesia! I think my parents are the real motivators in this update, as I would probably kill someone if I had to sit in a hospital waitingroom for the better part of a day.

Spoilers: The only reasons for why I was feeling so "thumbs up" were Percocet and Dilaudid.

As it turns out, the stitching on one of my Jackson-Pratt drains (or blood satchels, depending on how badass we're trying to make them sound) was loose, so I was draining onto the bedsheets a bit.

These drains serve to remove fluid that can amass post-surgery. You know the clear stuff that comes to the surface of the skin when you cut yourself? It's called lymph. It serves, among other things, to help remove bacteria and other unwanted materials inside the body. Since my torso was essentially hacksawed, there's obviously going to be quite a bit more lymph than you see when you scrape your knee.

The fluid starts out a red color (the lymph is tinged with a bit of blood) and eventually turns to a clear/yellow color. They're annoying in that you frequently have to empty them, measure the output, and you aren't allowed to shower if you have them in. Yay for spongebathing like an old man! As of typing this, I have one drain left from the four I had in my initially -- and we've found a way to seal off the drain site so that I can shower. Just by putting one of those clear, skin-like patches over where the tubing enters my body, it creates enough of a seal that I can shower without worrying too very much about the risk of water getting in/around the drain site.

This one's actually a picture of one of the first times I was able to stand on my own post-surgery. The incisions were still very red and I had quite a bit of scabbing. I'm not exactly sure what that face is, but it's certainly something along the lines of "For the love of Christ, take the picture so I can lay back down."

Those neat little yellow things over my nipples are nipple dressings. While that sounds like a chance for an amazing sexual innuendo, they weren't anything fun or exciting. Basically, since I had the excess skin around my manboobs removed (gynecomastia), they have to remove your nipples. Let me say that again: they have to remove your nipples. Once the manboobs are removed, they cut the nipples down in size so that they are more proportional to your bodysize and regraft them on.

The swelling around my sides that you'll notice is due to the liposuction. They're pretty aggressive with it, as my dad's friend said, "like they're vacuuming a car". It's gone down considerably since this picture was taken (a few days post-surgery) and should continue to go down quite a bit more.

Other than that, I'm looking pretty disheveled and homeless in this picture, but hey, you can't expect me to shave when I could hardly stand.

I've got one more update of things that have already happened that I will be posting after work today. Other than that, it's going to be "fresh content" updates [probably weekly or so, for a while at least] to document the healing process.

Weightloss Timeline

Seeing as it's 3 in the morning, I'm going to keep this update [relatively] concise. This update contains my weightloss timeline. It spans from my max weight of 355 lbs (Aug '09) to 205 lbs (my most recent picture). At some point -- likely later today, if I have time between work and watching the Ravens dismantle the Steelers -- I will upload what post-skin removal pictures I have. A bit of forewarning, they aren't pretty, but I feel the need to post them because apparently, despite my dry humor and smartassed personality, people find me motivating! I know that during my research phase (both before my RNY and before my recent surgery), blogs like these helped a ton in terms of getting me ready for what I should expect. My only hope is that this blog might have the same impact on some other overweight folk dealing with what we all deal with, mentally and physically, when excess weight is a factor in your life.

Future updates will be a bit more wordy, since, as many of you know, I don't know how to shut up. Don't go getting used to these shorter posts! Anyways, picture time:

Mission Statement

First, a bit about myself. I am a 21 yearold male residing in the rural-urban fringe of Maryland. I'm currently a student at Cecil College, dual-majoring in Visual Communications and 3D Simulation. Once I get my AAs, I plan to attend University of Baltimore for Simulation and Digital Entertainment. I work part time for a wedding/event catering hall and my job duties span from waiting and bussing to, more recently, bartending.

On March 9th of 2010 I underwent Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass. After nearing my weightloss goals so quickly, I decided to go under the knife once more to remove excess, loose skin that was a result of losing such a large amount of weight so rapidly. On December 22nd of 2010, just nine and a half months after my initial surgery, I underwent abdominoplasty, fleur de lis, gynecomastia and minor liposuction of my flanks/sides. Super-snazzy hand-drawn MSPaint pictures of what those are exactly are below!

This blog is intended to document my journey from 355 lbs to a more normal weight. As I am currently within two pounds of my pre-surgical goal weight of 200 lbs, 'fresh content' updates will show the healing process of the skin-removal surgeries that I underwent recently.
